Hamilton had a population of 60,690
in 2000. The city is 22.1 square miles with 0.5 square miles on water. The
elevation is 594 feet above sea level.
The
city was laid out in 1794 and was called Fairfield.
The army established a post there and called it Fort Hamilton
which was named for Alexander Hamilton, the Secretary of the Treasury. The town
was incorporated in 1810, but lost that status in 1815. It was incorporated
again in 1827. It became a city in 1857 and became a separate area from Fairfield and St Clair in
1867.
The
economy in the area was supported by iron works, manufacturing and the paper
industry during the first half of the twentieth century. Military supplies were
manufactured for World War II. These supplies included: machined and stamped metal
parts, ship and submarine engines and tank turrets.
